With a history that dates back to 1907, Big Elk Guard Station is the oldest continuously used administrative site within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, and a delightful setting for guests seeking a comfortable and unique getaway. For many decades the guard station served as summer headquarters for solitary forest "guards" who built trails, fought forest fires and patrolled the land on horseback. Most recently the site was used to house Forest Service seasonal fire crews. The cabin is the last remaining example of Forest Service log construction in the Forest and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Renters, please do not block access to or use the adjacent corral. Access is needed for National Forest projects that may be on-going during your stay. Entry through the access gate and to the cabin is by combination lock. The combination will be included in your confirmation letter. LOCK OPERATIONS: Once the combination has been entered, the shank of the lock must be depressed into the body of the lock, and then released before the lock will open. Please call the High Cascades Ranger District office at (541) 865-2700 four days prior to your arrival to confirm your combination; the office is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is closed on weekends and holidays Please contact the Ranger District prior to arriving at the cabin to check on any restrictions or conditions, such as fire or road closures, weather or storms that may affect the quality of your visit.
