Hearst Castle State Historical Monument, San Simeon

This castle was built by the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hurst. There are five tours (including one evening tour) available to take you through various portions of the house, gardens, pools and grounds.

One of the most famous landmarks at Hearst Castle is Neptune’s Pool. Construction for the Neptune Pool spanned 1924-1936. Three swimming pools were built on this site, each successively larger. The final version of the pool as it stands at the Castle today is 104 feet long, 58 feet wide and 95 feet wide at alcove. It is 3.5 feet deep at the west end, 10 feet at drains and holds 345,000 gallons of water. Other unique aspects of the Neptune Pool include the oil burning heating system, the light-veined Vermont marble decorating the pools and colonnades, and four 17-century Italian bas-reliefs on the sides of the colonnades. This pool is a highlight of all the tours.

Tour One now includes the companion movie Hearst Castle “Building the Dream” shown on a giant 5 story screen in the Hearst Castle Theater.

The Evening Tour, available in the spring and fall, allows guests to view this historic California mansion in the twilight hours—just as one of Mr. Hearst’s own visitors did in the 1930s. Wind your way through House A (Casa del Mar), Casa Grande’s social rooms, guest accommodations, the Library and Mr. Hearst’s own private Gothic Suite. Guests and staff dressed in 1930s period attire complete the experience, bringing the Castle to life once again.

Hearst Castle is located on the majestic Central Coast of California. Nestled in the hills at San Simeon, the Castle sits halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and is approximately a five hour drive from either of these metropolitan areas. Be sure to check local road conditions.

Hearst Castle is located on California Highway 1, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Approximately 230 miles.

Tour reservations are highly recommended and can be made online at their website or by calling (800) 444-4445.
