In 1542, San Diego was the first site on the west coast of what is now the United States visited by Europeans. Considered the birth place of California, the Presidio and Mission of San Diego were founded in 1769.
Area attractions include the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, and San Diego Wild Animal Park.
