On the California coast at Morro Bay hundreds of birders converge to see, photograph and learn more about birds. Located on the Pacific Flyway, the area offers the chance to view birds in one the best settings in the US. The event sponsored by the Morro Coast Audobon Society, typically has over 200 species sighted during the festival. As a Globally Important Bird Area, and a State and National Estuary, Morro Bay is the ideal location for this eco-tourism event that promotes awareness of the environment and of conservation issues. Festival events include tours, cruises, boat rides, kayaking, and van trips. Workshops are offered on various topics such as beginning birding and gull identification. Vendors and booths offer nature-related artwork, books, field equipment and more. The Winter Bird Festival headquarters are at the Morro Bay Community Center at 1001 Kennedy Way. All field trips originate from this location unless otherwise noted in the brochure. You will be provided a map showing all venues when you pick up your registration packet.

Description
Located on the central coast of California, Morro Bay was named in 1542 by Portuguese navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The town’s most notable feature is Morro Rock. The rock is a 576 foot high volcanic plug and a preserve to the endangered peregrine falcon. The bay itself is only passable to relatively small boats due to a large, natural sandspit. The US Coast Guard believes the harbor to be one of the most dangerous in the nation. A historic fishing village and home to a large commercial fishing fleet, the seafood is always fresh in area restaurants. The natural beauty and sunny, mild climate makes this town a popular vacation destination.
