Gold Country

Gold, with its glittering promise of the sweet life, once lured into this region more than 300,000 fortune seekers from the far reaches of the world. From 1848 onward, the 49ers, as they were called, staked their claims in the streams and foothills of the Sierra Nevada, covering a 300-mile-long area known as the Mother Lode. Countless events are scheduled throughout 1999 and 2000 California's Sesquicentennial is celebrated. Local parks will be able to inform you of special events in the area.

Lying just east of the Central Valley this region covers the foothills where gold was found including Sierraville and Downieville in the north and continues along Hwy 49 to Oakhurst and Coarsegold in the south. This region is a gateway to Yosemite National Park.

The Gold Country has a wide variety of attractions including the charming gold rush towns, historic state parks, gold mine tours, jumping frog contests, and a gateway to Yosemite National Parkl ... just to name a few!
